How to Budget Biweekly Paychecks

Getting paid every two weeks is great until rent is due the day before payday. The fix is to budget by paycheck, not by month. Here's the method in five steps.

Shortcut: the free Paycheck Budget Calculator does steps 1–5 for you. Type in your pay and bills and it shows which paycheck covers each one.

1. Find your take-home per paycheck

Use the amount that hits your bank account, after taxes, insurance and retirement deductions. If it changes (hourly work, overtime), use your lowest typical paycheck so you never over-plan.

2. List every bill with its due day

Rent or mortgage, utilities, phone, internet, insurance, car payment, minimum debt payments, subscriptions. Write the amount and the day of the month it's due.

3. Assign each bill to a paycheck

Pay each bill from the last paycheck that arrives on or before its due date. Example with paydays on the 3rd and 17th:

PaycheckBills it covers
3rdInternet (due 8th), Phone (12th), Streaming (15th)
17thCar insurance (20th), Electric (25th), Rent (due 1st of next month)

If one paycheck ends up carrying almost everything (usually because of rent), move a smaller bill to the other check, or ask the company to change your due date. Many will.

4. Split what's left: 50/30/20 or your own split

The 50/30/20 rule puts 50% of take-home toward needs, 30% toward wants and 20% toward savings or extra debt payments. Your bills come out of the "needs" part. If needs eat more than 50%, which is common with high rent, use 60/20/20 or 70/20/10 instead. A split you can stick to beats a perfect one you can't.

5. Plan for 3-paycheck months

With 26 paychecks a year, two months a year have three paydays. Build your budget on two paychecks a month. When the third one comes, it's already free: put it toward savings, an emergency fund or a debt.

Monthly income from biweekly pay

Average monthly take-home = paycheck × 26 ÷ 12. For a $1,800 paycheck that's about $3,900 a month on average, but most months you'll only receive $3,600 (two checks). That's why step 5 matters.
