Which paycheck pays which bill
Each bill is assigned to the last paycheck that lands on or before its due date. "Left to spend" is what remains after bills and your savings target.
How to budget by paycheck
- Use take-home pay, not salary. That's the amount that actually lands in your account each payday.
- Pick a split. 50/30/20 means 50% for needs (rent, utilities, groceries, minimum debt payments), 30% for wants, 20% for savings or extra debt payoff. If rent is high, 60/20/20 or 70/20/10 is more realistic.
- List every bill with its due day. Each bill gets paid from the last paycheck before it's due, so you're never short when it hits.
- Watch for big-bill paychecks. If one paycheck carries rent, move a smaller bill to the other one or ask the company to change the due date.
- Biweekly pay? Plan for 3-paycheck months. Twice a year you get a third check. Budget on two per month and put the extra toward savings or debt.
