Bill Due Date Planner

“My paycheck never seems to line up with my rent due date.” Enter your paydays and each bill's due day to know exactly what bill is coming out of which check, what's left from each one, and which paycheck comes up short before it happens.

1. Your paydays

2. Your bills

Which paycheck pays which bill

Each bill goes on the last paycheck that lands on or before its due date (minus your days early). Bills due early in the month often land on the last check of the month before.

How to match bills to paychecks

  1. Write your pay dates for the month, plus the last payday of the month before.
  2. List every bill with its due day. Don't forget annual or quarterly bills that land this month.
  3. Give each bill to the last paycheck before it's due. That check has to hold the money until then. Rent due on the 1st usually comes from the last paycheck of the previous month.
  4. Look at what's left on each check. If one is in the red, move a smaller bill to an earlier check, save part of a big bill from the check before, or ask the company to move your due date.
  5. On payday, subtract that check's bills. As one person put it: “whatever's left is what i can spend.”

FAQ

How do I know which paycheck to pay a bill from?

Use the last paycheck that arrives on or before the bill's due date. If you pay from an earlier check, that money is tied up longer than it needs to be. If you wait for a later one, the bill is late.

Why is rent on last month's paycheck?

If rent is due on the 1st and your first payday is the 5th, the only check that arrives in time is the last one of the previous month. The planner shows it with a "last month" tag so you know to hold that money back.

One paycheck has way more bills than the other. What can I do?

Three common fixes: call and ask to move a due date (many lenders, utilities and phone companies will), set aside part of the big bill from the check before, or pay a small bill early from the lighter check.

What does "pay bills days early" do?

It makes the planner require the paycheck to land that many days before the due date. Use it if your deposit posts late in the day or a payment takes a couple of days to process.

Does this work for weekly or twice-a-month pay?

Yes. Pick weekly, every two weeks, twice a month (choose your two days), or monthly. For twice-a-month pay on the 30th, February uses the last day of the month.
